William R. ‘Bill’ Pietila

SUOMI LOCATION, MI - William R. 'Bill' Pietila, 79, of Suomi Location, died Wednesday evening, May 1st, 2013 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since September, 2012.

Bill was born November 9, 1933 in Palmer to William J. and Sylvia (Anderson) Pietila, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1951 and was a lifelong Richmond Township resident. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War. Following his service to his country he was employed as an electrician for Cleveland Cliffs at the Empire Mine, retiring in 1993 with 43 years of service with the company. He was a member of the Palmer Fire Department for many years and also served as the Richmond Township Supervisor for 37 years.

Mr. Pietila was a member of the Community Lutheran Church, Suomi, the Richmond Township Community Club and the Negaunee Elks. He was an avid deer hunter and Lake Superior fisherman, teaching his sons how to fish and hunt.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Doreen E. 'Betty' (Kangas) Pietila; 3 sons: Kurt Pietila of Palmer, Craig (Cathy) Pietila and Kevin (Angie Mays) Pietila, both of Suomi Location; 5 grandchildren: Nicholas (Tina) Pietila, Benjamin (Maderia) Pietila, Shawn, Troy and Krista Pietila; 4 great grandchildren: Matthew, Samantha, Aspen and Everest Pietila; a sister, Carol (Philip) Pfannstiel of Harvey; brother-in-law, Marvin Kangas of Palmer; sister-in-law, Sharon (Earl) Hannan of Columbus; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill was preceded in death by his parents & a brother Wallace.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4th at Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Douglas Norquist officiating. Burial will be in the Bakkala Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday.
