This column is a sample of volunteer opportunities available in Marquette County. Persons 55 or older can learn about these and other possibilities in their community by contacting Amy Mattson at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program at 485-1782. Upper Peninsula Home Health, Hospice and Private Duty will host a free volunteer training class from noon to 3 p.m. today. Snacks will be provided. Eastwood Nursing Center Activities Department seeks volunteers to help residents on outings, with activities and for creative new ideas for residents. Call Amy Fraley at 475-7500.

St. Vincent de Paul in Ishpeming seeks a volunteer with the skills to do minor electrical repairs such as replacing electrical cords or switches, to check out the donated electronics before they are put out in the store. Stop by or call the store at 486-4237.

Salvation Army in Marquette seeks one or two people to help a few hours each week in the food pantry, and someone who could answer the phone daily and take messages. Call Capt. Lake Superior Hospice seeks volunteers for its team and to participate in the free Spring Volunteer Training April 12 and 13. Volunteers are needed for friendly visiting, caregiver relief, office assistance, veteran-to-veteran and community outreach. Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic in Marquette, seeks adult volunteers for homework night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Area youths and adult volunteer tutors gather for guided study, tutoring, and discussion. Youths can use the church computer labs and other resources to complete assignments or school projects in the company and support of other youths and adults. Call the church at 225-1119 or visit

The Negaunee Senior Citizens Center seeks volunteers to put together scrapbooks of photos and memorabilia from the last few years at the center. Scrapbooking materials are available. Call the senior center at 475-6266.

The Hiawatha National Forest seeks volunteers to help out at their greenhouse at 1030 Wright St. in Marquette. Volunteers are needed to help seed cells, transplant and water plants. For information, email

Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes seeks volunteers to support the summer camp program located at Camp Nesbit in Sidnaw the weeks of July 9 to 22. Volunteer roles include: counselor, kitchen staff, nurse, art staff, and certified lifeguards as waterfront staff. Two or three certified high ropes instructors are needed. UPAWS seeks people to help with Wish List Collection Drives. Three times a month volunteers stand outside a local store and pass out the UPAWS wish list and collect donations. Volunteers are needed also to serve as cleaners and kitty cuddlers mornings at the Petsmart Adoption Center. Sign up for the Poster Pals team to help get the word out around town. Ongoing docent (tour guide) volunteer opportunities are available at the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University. For two weeks each November and May local K-12 schools schedule tours of the exhibitions on display in the museum. No experience necessary; training is provided. Time commitment is minimal; one hour training session and one and a half hours per tour. Schedules are e-mailed in advance and volunteers respond based on their availability. Licensed cosmetologists are needed for two hours once per month to cut and style wigs for patients with medical-related hair loss. Volunteers are needed to greet patients and visitors and to provide hospital information once per week for a four-hour shift. Gift Shop volunteers are needed; days and times flexible. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger counties seeks Big Brothers for its community program in Marquette, Munising, Gwinn/Sawyer and Ishpeming areas. Big Sisters are needed in the Gwinn/Sawyer and Ishpeming areas. BBBS also has a boy in Ishpeming and a girl in the Harvey area waiting for matches in the SWIM Program, which matches children with type 1 diabetes to a mentor who also has type 1 diabetes. Negaunee Public Schools seeks walking school bus volunteers to walk with elementary students one Wednesday morning each month (approximately seven to eight blocks).
