MARQUETTE - Interested artists have just one week remaining to submit works to the Blueberry Festival poster contest.

Poster submissions - which must be original works in any medium - will be accepted through next Monday at the Marquette Downtown Development Authority office.

"All of those submissions will then get put up on our website," said Emily Lanctot, marketing and events coordinator for the DDA, which will use the resulting poster to advertise this year's Blueberry Festival.

People can vote online at www.downtownmarquette.org, as well as in-person at city hall, where the works will be displayed. A winner will be announced shortly after the vote, which runs from May 13 to 29.

The DDA last year received more than 80 entries, but Lanctot said the numbers are down this year.

"Normally we have quite a few," she said. "But usually a lot of them come in the final week."

The contest is open to anyone. The work must be original and no larger than 11 inches by 17 inches. Two entries are allowed per artist.

The winning work will be used by the DDA to create a poster for the annual Blueberry Festival, which is scheduled for July 26 in downtown Marquette. The 150 festival posters will be signed by the artist.

Submissions will also be placed on display during the month of July in the Marquette Arts and Culture Center at Peter White Public Library.

Though the DDA is still in the early planning stages for this year's festival, Lanctot said it will include vendors, sidewalk sales and games.

"It has gotten bigger and better every year," Lanctot said of the event.

Submitted artwork must be matted, framed or otherwise mounted and the title of the work, as well as the artist's name and contact information, must be clearly labeled on the back.

Poster submissions can be turned in at the DDA office or mailed to 203 S. Front St., Suite 1-B, Marquette, MI 49855.
