ALLENDALE - The Northern Michigan University outdoor track and field team turned back into an indoor team on Saturday when the Wildcats competed at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University. The meet was moved indoors in the morning after freezing rain left a layer of ice on the outdoor track overnight.
The Wildcats had four top-five finishers. Sophomore Brittni Wirtz was second in the 60-meter dash in 8.01 seconds, Junior Cheyenne Stewart was second in the long jump, clearing 17 feet, 11 inches, while senior Colby West was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 47.56 seconds.
Six Wildcats broke into the top 20 in the 5,000, led by sophomore Olivia Howard (18:19.73) in third. Junior Chelsea Farquhar and sophomore Emily Allen were eighth and ninth, respectively.
Junior Mallory Celaya (10:42.3) took sixth in the 3,000 followed by junior Evelyne Ruiz in ninth. Junior Sydney Schultz was eighth in the 400 in 1:00.37 and the 4-by-400 relay team finished fifth.
Northern has a week off before traveling to Ashland, Ohio, for the GLIAC Championships on from May 1-3.
