Pair of USOEC Greco-Roman wrestlers win at Junior Nationals

MARQUETTE - Two U.S. Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestlers became national champions at the ASICS Junior Nationals held in Las Vegas on Friday.

Seven other USOEC wrestlers also medaled by placing second or third.

Isaiah Varona, wrestling at 55 kilograms (121.3 pounds) won his third national title after pinning defeating Trey Andrews of Bear Cave in the gold-medal match, 4-2, 4-0.

Earlier, he pinned Nickolas of Suples Wrestling Club at 31 seconds of the second period, pinned Kyndall Rutz of Colorado USA Wrestling at 45 seconds of the second period, and decisioned Cameron Perry of Gilmer Bobcat Wrestling, 7-0, 1-0.

Alejandro Sancho, who like Varona is from Miami, competed at 66 kg (145.5 lbs.). Sancho outpointed Rylan Lubeck of Badger Wrestling, 2-0, 3-3, for the gold medal.

Before that, he pinned Timmy Box of Dave Schulz Elite at 1:19 of the first period and decisioned Sahid Kargbo of Patriot Elite Wrestling, 7-0, 1-3, 3-0.

Each of those champions earn No. 1 seeds at the ASICS U.S. Junior World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla., from June 20-23, while others who placed also qualified for that meet.

Three USOEC silver medalists included Barrett Stanghill at 74 kg (163.1 lbs.), who didn't give up a point until the title match, when he lost to Geordan Speiller of Florida Jets, 2-0, 0-1, 1-0.

Zeke Honegger at 79 kg (174.2 lbs.) had a pair of pins before falling to William Baker of Rocky Mountain Training in the finals, 3-1, 5-1.

Recruit and guest athlete Orry Elor entered his first event at the USOEC and reached the 120 kg (264.6 lb.) championship match before falling to Adam Coon of Fowlerville, 4-2, 1-0.

Bronze medalists from the USOEC included Arthur Carmona at 55 kg, Michael Mioni at 63 kg (138.9 lbs.), Dillon Cowan at 74 kg and Khymba Johnson at 96 kg (211.6 lbs.).

Others in the top six include Ramon Moreno in fifth at 50 kg (110.2 lbs.), Jessy Williams in sixth at 60 kg (132.3 lbs.) and Aiseah Achesah in sixth at 79 kg (174.2 lbs.).
