ISHPEMING - The Michigan State Police is celebrating its 96th anniversary, and included in the observance will be an open house at the Negaunee Township post Friday.

The open house is an opportunity for the public to come in and view the equipment, trooper Stacey Rasanen said.

She said it will also be a day to reflect on the history and traditions of the state police and to remember the dedication and sacrifice of those who have served.

"It's a fun family event that's interactive for kids," Rasanen said. "People don't get to see this side of us and it's a chance for them to see what we do."

In addition to getting a tour of the post, visitors will be able to view the Marquette County Emergency Operations Center, Marquette County Central Dispatch and the Negaunee Regional Communications Center. There will also be displays and canine demonstrations.

"We use the public's tax dollars and this is a good chance for them to see what we do," Rasanen said.

Representatives from the state police dive team, Canine Division and emergency support team will be present at the open house. Marquette County Search and Rescue, dive team, a canine handler and the extrication truck will also be at the event, along with the American Red Cross.

The open house is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m.
