ESCANABA - An Escanaba couple has been arraigned on felony charges in a case police said is related to the torturing of a 15-year-old boy.

Escanaba Public Safety said Susan Marie Bardo, 46, the boy's mother, and her boyfriend, Carl James Pellinen, 47, are each charged with first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and torture.

They were arrested after search warrants were executed at their residence on the 1500 block of North 20th Street on Friday.

Officers were dispatched to the home to do a welfare check on the boy who was found in an upstairs room approximately eight-feet by 10-feet and lined with tarps, according to a news release from public safety.

After police interviewed the boy about his living conditions, he was taken to OSF St. Francis Hospital for a medical evaluation.

Bardo and Pellinen were arraigned on the charges in Delta County District Court on Monday and remain lodged in the Delta County Jail each in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond.
