NMPSA seminar at Lakeview

MARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan Public Service Academy will sponsor a seminar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 18 in the Citizen's Forum at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. Dan Gilmartin, executive director and CEO of the Michigan Municipal League will present on why placemaking is important as an economic development strategy in the state.

A panel discussion will follow with regional examples of successful placemaking in the Upper Peninsula. The panel will include Noquemanon Trails Network Director Nicole Dewald; Marquette DDA Director Mona Lang (Marquette Commons hub, etc); businessman Matt Sviland, Escanaba Lofts on Ludington historical mixed use project; and Houghton City Manager Scott MacIness, Smartzone/downtown job retention.

Dan Doezema, Michigan Office of Services to the Aging, will share insight on the "Aging in Place initiative, preparing communities to retain the largest and wealthiest segment of an aging population in our nation's history."

Kerry Ott, Manistique Community Coordinator for the Sault Tribe Strategic Alliance for health, will offer information on how diverse partners working together in a community can create environments that are healthier for residents, such as easy access to physical activity farmers' markets and green spaces. The work and process of the city of Manistique will be highlighted.

Seminar fees are $25 for NMPSA members, $75 for others if registered by April 11.
