MARQUETTE - Greco-Roman wrestler Max Nowry won a gold medal to lead Team USA at the Pan American Championships on Friday in Panama City, Panama.
Also the 2012 University World champion, Nowry swept Cristian Novas Feliz of the Dominican Republic 6-0, 2-1 in the 55-kilogram (121-pound) gold-medal match.
Two USOEC alumni also medaled for Team USA. Robbie Smith earned silver at 120 kg (265 lbs.) and Jake Fisher a bronze at 74 kg (163 lbs.).
Nowry, Smith and Fisher led the U.S. to first place in the tournament with 57 points, as runner-up Cuba had 50 and the Dominican Republic was third with 49.
Nowry reached the championship match by dispatching Abner Elel Vasquez of Guatemala in the quarterfinals, 0-1, 3-1, 3-0, and Jairo Medina Garcia of Venezuela in the semifinals, 1-0, 2-0.
The competition is the annual continental championship among North and South American athletes.
