GREEN BAY, Wis. - Former Michigan Tech and current Wisconsin-Green Bay women's basketball coach John Barnes was named head coach at Youngstown State on Friday, according to a report on school's website.
YSU plays in the Division I Horizon League along with Wisconisin-Green Bay, where Barnes was associate head coach for the past season under UWGB head coach Kevin Borseth, another former MTU women's coach.
An online report on the Green Bay Press-Gazette website said Barnes had planned to return to UWGB next season, but his plans changed after interviewing at the Ohio school this week.
Barnes, 40, replaces Bob Boldon, who was hired at Ohio University after three years at Youngstown. It will be Barnes' fifth stop in as many years after stepping down at Michigan Tech after the 2010 season. He was head coach for seven seasons there, compiling a 156-55 record, making five appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament and earning GLIAC Coach of the Year honors his final three seasons there.
He was an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin in the 2010-11 season before head coach Lisa Stone and her entire staff were fired at the end of that season. He then went to the University of Michigan with Borseth for 2011-12 and followed Borseth to UWGB this past season.
UWGB went 29-2 last season, while the previous year, Michigan had just its fourth 20-win season in its history.
