NEGAUNEE - Apparently, you have to get up awfully early to get the best of Morning Glory.

The Negaunee-based team used balanced scoring to blow out Sunny Girls of Marquette, 62-36, in the opening game of the Women's Class B division at the Negaunee Invitational Tournament on Friday evening.

This along with the Women's Class A and coed 45-years-and-over divisions take over the 49th edition of the Charter Communications-sponsored basketball event this weekend at Negaunee's Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium.

Each will complete play on Sunday with championship games to be played that afternoon and evening.

In the Morning Glory win, Sarah McDonald scored 14 points and teammate Kennan Marana added nine for the Negaunee team, while Stephanie Ridolphi scored 12 points and Shellby Stieg 10 for Sunny Girls.

Morning Glory advances to play The Model Towners at 11:30 a.m. today, the third of three straight Class B games that get underway at 9 a.m. in this double-elimination division.

Women's Class A features three teams in round-robin play, beginning with Jack's Tee Pee of Ishpeming facing Remie's of Marquette at 12:45 p.m.

Marquette County teams swept the first two 45-over games with 13-point victories later Friday, with GE Builders of Negaunee handling Forward Financial of Niagara, Wis., 70-57, while 3% Realty of Marquette upended Shirt Tails of Iron Mountain, 63-50.

Like Women's Class B, the 45-over division is double elimination with games resuming in the winner's bracket at 2 p.m. today.

For GE Builders, Jim Marietti scored 18 points and Jay Chapman 12, while Forward's Dale DalSanto had a game-high 20 points and Tony Calo 14.

Rich Ledy led 3% Realty in its win with 22 points, while teammate Phil Johns chipped in with 14. Shirt Tails was paced by Paul Polfus with 11 points.

Today's 11-game schedule ends with a Women's Class B winner's bracket game set to start at 9:30 p.m. before Sunday's action gets going again at 9 a.m. in the 45-over division.
