Steven G. ‘Haiki’ Reichel

BIG BAY, Mich. - Steven G. "Haiki" Reichel, 64, of Halfway Location, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, March 28, 2013 at his home.

Haiki was born on December 15, 1948 in Marquette, a son of the late Charles J. and Eileen B. (Stewart) Reichel. He attended Marquette area schools, graduating in 1967 from Marquette Senior High School. He was also a graduate of the NMU Skills Center receiving a certificate as an auto body technician. Haiki worked for several years at auto body shops in the Marquette area. He was later employed at the Huron Mountain Club for many years in various capacities including trail grooming.

Haiki greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and being in the outdoors. He built his own home and was very good at making knives, hatchets and fishing poles. Whatever he did, his dog Stanley was not far behind him.

Survivors include his wife, Ramona Kittila whom he married on March 28, 2007; one daughter, Amy Sue Rooks of Rock; a granddaughter, Jonie Rooks; one sister, Char McDonnell of AuTrain and a brother, James (Patty) Reichel of Gwinn; nieces and nephews, Kevin and Aaron McDonnell, Shawn (Jenny) Reichel, Tabatha (Mike) Surfass, and Shane (Ela) Robertson; great nieces and nephews, Maddie McDonnell, Devin and Rayla Surfass; also his canine companion, Stanley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Gary McDonnell.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Bishop's Room of St. Peter Cathedral followed by a Funeral Mass at 12 noon Tuesday in the cathedral with the Rev. Ryan Ford officiating.
