MARQUETTE - Morgan Seibert, Whitney LaFave and Lydia Seibert made sure Friday the Marquette Senior High School girls' softball team got off to a good start in both the season and the 10th Annual MSHS Spring Swing at the Superior Dome.
Morgan Seibert took the mound win in a 3-2 victory over Escanaba. She went 3 2/3 innings, didn't give up a hit and walked just one while striking out four.
Whitney LaFave went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run, while Lydia Seibert - Morgan's cousin - added two safeties and an RBI.
Morgan Seibert, who chipped in a triple for the Redettes, also picked up a save in relief of Senja Liimatta after the Eskymos had reduced a 3-0 deficit to just a run in the bottom of the fifth and final inning. Escanaba stranded a runner at second and third.
"I was real happy (with how we played)," MSHS manager Paul Seibert said. "We played flawlessly until the last inning when we had a couple of hiccups.
"Escanaba's a tough team and we outhit them 10-1. We started off on a good note."
In other contests Friday, Ishpeming and Superior Central played to a 3-3 tie; Escanaba's JV dumped Houghton, 7-1; Gladstone routed Manistique, 19-0; Marquette's JV blanked Kingsford, 5-0; Norway turned back Munising, 13-3; Kingsford edged Stephenson, 6-5; and Ironwood beat Superior Central, 10-7.
