NEGAUNEE, Mich. - Edwin Robert Hakala, age 86, of 103 East Main Street, Negaunee, died Thursday morning, March 28, 2013 at his home.
Edwin was born December 11, 1926 in Princeton to the late Jacob and Maria (Oja) Hakala. He was a 1943 graduate of Gwinn High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, stationed in the Philippines. He went on to graduate from Northern Michigan University in 1950 and the University of Michigan in 1953. He worked for the Dept. of Health in Ann Arbor from 1952 to 1956. Edwin was the owner of Hakala Well and Pump Service from 1956 until the present time. He continued to work in the business with his sons, James and Michael. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Negaunee, Negaunee Lions Club for 51 years, was Trustee of Michigan Lions Service Fund, Negaunee Recreation Commission, Gwinn VFW, Ishpeming Elks, National Ground Water Association, Michigan Ground Water Association, Chairman of Michigan Water Well Advisory Board from 1965 to 1977, and Chairman of Ishpeming/Negaunee Water Authority. Edwin was one of the veterans on the Honor Flight in October 2012 to Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Joann, loved to travel, which included trips to Germany, Switzerland, and two trips to Finland visiting Ed's relatives. He also enjoyed meeting his friends for coffee.
Survivors include his wife, Joann, three sons; James (Lisa) Hakala of Negaunee, Michael (Kathy) Hakala of Negaunee, and Gerry (Laurie) Hakala of Comstock Park, MI, two daughters; Joellyn (Alan) Kainulainen of Negaunee and Roberta (Ronnie) Jones of Gardner, MA, his grandchildren; Amanda and Sara Kainulainen, Alyssa Hakala, Heather Jarvi, Meghan, Mikayla and Jacob Hakala, Cory Holmgren, twins; Katelyn and Andrew Hakala, Alaina and Jaden Jones, and great grandchildren; Riley Carlson and Eli Jarvi, two brothers; Oiva (Betty) Hakala of Marquette, and Donald (Marcy) Hakala of Campbell, TX, one sister-in-law; Viona Hakala of Livonia, MI, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; Irving Hakala, Rudolph Hakala, and Alfred Hakala, three sisters; Aune Pelkie, Ellen Kirmo, and Irene Perry, and his niece; Anne Hakala Schilling.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 1, 2013, at 1:00pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Solberg officiating. Friends may call at the church from 11:00am until the time of the service. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The Perala Funeral Home is assisting the family.
