MARQUETTE - A Big Bay man was taken to Marquette General Hospital today with broken legs after the pickup truck he was driving struck a Coca-Cola semi-tractor trailer along U.S. 41 in Negaunee Township.

Edward Havel, 57, was taken to Marquette General by Bell EMS with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Hospital officials said Havel's condition was unknown this morning.

Michigan State Police at the Negaunee regional post said the crash was reported at 6:55 a.m. and occurred at the intersection of Airport Road.

Police said Havel was driving a 2005 Ford F150 pickup for J.M. Longyear LLC west on U.S. 41 when David Rushford, 33, of Ishpeming, who was driving a 2005 Freightliner, failed to yield.

Havel's truck slammed into the trailer of Rushford's Coke truck. The semi tractor-trailer was crossing the highway to turn east, police said. Rushford was ticketed for failure to yield.

Traffic on U.S. 41 was shut down briefly. Police said freezing rain had coated the highway with ice at the time of the accident.

As vehicles stopped near the accident site, a few vehicles slid off the road. Police said those incidents did not produce crashes or injuries.

Additional agencies assisting state police with the accident included Marquette County Search and Rescue, Marquette County Sheriff's Office and the Negaunee Township Fire Department.
