NEGAUNEE - The Negaunee High School girls gymnastics team placed its largest number of competitors ever in regional competition Saturday in downstate Rockford.

The Miners had five gymnasts take part in individual competition only. NHS coach Eyre Becker said 50-60 gymnasts competed in each discipline.

The Miners' Katie Torreano saw action in three events, posting an 8.15 in vault, 8.0 in floor and 7.75 in beam.

Kate Malicka, an exchange student from the Czech Republic, posted a 7.65 in floor after suffering an injury the night before in warmups.

Other NHS gymnasts to compete and their score were: Kate Rasmussen in beam, 7.07; Rachel LaCosse in vault, 8.1; and Katie McGreaham in vault, 8.05.

"We were happy to have so many qualify for regionals," Becker said. "All the girls were consistent and that's what any coach looks for."
