NEWBERRY - Manistique hoisted a district tournament championship trophy for the first time since 2006 with a 50-34 victory Friday night at Newberry in a Class C final.
"This is a big deal for us," Emeralds' coach Kelley Spettel said. "I'm very proud of the way the girls played."
The victory sends Manistique (8-14) to the regional tournament in Marquette to face Ishpeming on Tuesday.
Kyra Lauzon scored 17 points for Manistique, which led 26-17 at halftime and 39-21 after three quarters. The Emeralds committed 24 turnovers.
Cori Canfield led the Indians (5-14) with 12 points.
Houghton 58, L'Anse 42
In a Class C district championship game played in Houghton, the Gremlins won their 14th straight title by erasing a 29-22 halftime deficit.
L'Anse (13-8) took the lead in the second quarter with a 12-4 run when key Houghton defenders Sydney Dillinger and Elisa Jurmu had to sit due to foul trouble. But their return to start the second half helped spark a 12-0 run as the Gremlins took the lead for good.
Madi Swanson finished with 17 points to lead Baraga.
LL-Hubbell 46, Baraga 41
In a Class D district championship game played in Painesdale, Baraga made a late run at the Lakes by hitting consecutive 3-pointers and a free throw to cut a 10-point deficit to three with less than two minutes to go.
Then LL-H hit four straight free throws by sisters Morgan and Erin Gast to ensure the Lakes' first district title since 1984.
Sarah Audette led LL-H with 11 points
For Baraga (11-11), seniors Brittany Nieskes scored 12 points and Shannon Fish 10.
