ISHPEMING - Westwood overcame a two-point second quarter to record a 48-43 victory over L'Anse in a high school boys basketball game played Thursday.
The Patriots trailed 16-14 at halftime after their offense dried up in the period No. 2, but Westwood (5-14) turned it around with 17 points in both the third and fourth quarters.
"We lost a bit of focus in the first half," Patriots coach Ryan Reichel said. "But I think both teams woke up a little bit in the second half. It might've been a matter of looking forward to the districts (tournament) next week."
Westwood, 5-3 in its last eight games after a winless start, got 12 points from senior sharpshooter Josh Richards, who got all his points on 3-pointers. Earlier this week against Ishpeming, he hit a trio of triples.
Junior Justin Luke added 10 points and six rebounds, while freshman Luke Gray and senior Travis Swanson added seven points apiece. Gray also made three steals while Swanson had a team-high nine rebounds.
For L'Anse (9-10), Jacob Ostermeyer scored 16 points and Keith Denomie added 13.
The Patriots also won the JV game, 57-46.
At Newberry, Munising finished the regular season at 16-4 with a big third quarter, turning a narrow 26-23 halftime advantage into a 51-30 lead by the start of the fourth quarter.
Newberry mounted a comeback in the final period after the Mustangs missed all nine of their free-throw attempts, even though they were 14 of 19 in the first three quarters.
Mustangs sophomore guard Alex Hill led all scorers with 14 points, while senior guard Gage Webster added 10.
For Newberry (3-17), senior forward Kyle Welty scored 13 points and senior guard Dustin Brown had nine.
Forest Park 64,
At Crystal Falls, the visiting Hawks grabbed an 8-2 lead after one quarter before Forest Park coach Chris Nocerini reinserted most of his regulars to get the Trojans a 23-19 halftime lead in this Skyline Conference game.
For R-M (4-14, 0-14), junior center Jonatan Lygdman scored 19 points and added 10 rebounds, while junior David Simula scored nine points.
