HOUGHTON - The Northern Michigan University nordic ski teams nearly pulled off a sweep at the NCAA Central Regional on Sunday.
The men's team won their title 130-123 over the University of Alaska, while the women's team was edged by the Nanooks 129-124 to finish as runners-up.
The Wildcats edged out Alaska for the overall regional title via a combined score of 154-152.
Juniors George Cartwright and Eric Soderman and sophomore Kyle Braturd swept the podium with the first three finishes in the men's 15-kilometer freestyle.
Wildcats senior Chris Bowler finished 19th, junior Ben Hugus 24th and freshman Sam Elfstrom 41st.
Juniors Rosie Frankowski was second and Jordyn Ross third for the women in the 10K freestyle. Freshman Mary Kate Cirelli also scored for Northern in eighth place.
Freshmen teammate Hannah Boyer was ninth and Megan Edic 22nd.
Skiers find out Tuesday which seven men and six women will represent the region at the NCAA national championships to be held March 6-9 in Middlebury, Vt.
