MARQUETTE - Junior winger Cam Verigin scored the first two goals to propel Marquette to a 5-1 victory over Negaunee at Lakeview Arena in Marquette in the final regular-season high school hockey game for both teams.

Negaunee was fortunate Verigin's first goal was the only one of the first period, thanks to the goaltending of Miners goalie Anthony Moyle.

"He played a great game," MSHS coach Mike L'Huillier said. "He made our saves look easy, as he's really quick with the glove."

Moyle stopped 35 shots, including 17 in the first period when Verigin got the only goal with 6:09 gone.

He made it 2-0 early in the second before junior teammate Cole Rieboldt and senior Shawn Cornock bumped it to 4-0 late in the period. Rieboldt's was shorthanded.

Negaunee got its lone score 1:03 into the third off the stick of senior Bryce Blewett, while Redmen sophomore Brett Specker answered about 12 minutes later.

Marquette (6-19) senior Forest Folker had a three-assist playmaker, while Cornock and senior teammates Cam Place, Ryan Hanson and Tyler Jackson each had one assist. Sophomore Chad Larson assisted on the Miners goal.

Marquette junior Ethan Wiese was called on to make just 12 saves.

Both teams open preregional play at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Redmen taking on Kingsford and Negaunee hosting Escanaba.
