James R. Manley

ISHPEMING, MI - James R. Manley, age 70, of 717 W. Empire St. #104A, Ishpeming, entered eternal life on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 9:55am at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee. Jim was in the loving presence of family members and under the care of the Lake Superior Hospice.

Jim was born March 15, 1942 in Ishpeming the son of Ray and Lillian (Hebert) Manley. Jim grew up in Ishpeming and was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1960. He furthered his education at Northern Michigan University, where he received his bachelor's degree in education, and at Central Michigan University, where he received his master's degree in administration. Jim taught in the Flint and Gaylord school districts prior to moving back to this area becoming the director of the Ishpeming- Negaunee - NICE Community Schools for many years. Upon his retirement from the Community Schools, Jim took up the superintendents role in the Big Bay (Powell Twp.) school district for several years.

Jim was a faithful member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He enjoyed time spent with his family and friends, especially when it involved his grandchildren. Jim could always be counted on at coffee time, often finding out the pulse of the community, along with time spent in his garage in the summers. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, working out at Shape-up fitness center, and cross country-skiing in the winters. In his retirement years, Jim became a Harley Owner and was a member of the HOG group. Motorcycle rides with family and friends were always high on Jim's priority list.

Survivors include 2 sons Scott (Megan) Manley of Naperville, IL and Chad (Marlo) Manley of Ishpeming, 2 sisters Helen (Frank) Sarvello and Priscilla (Angelo) Tasson both of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren Brody, Brayden, Malia and Connor along with an expected grandson, a special nephew Kim (Nancy) Mallett along with other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Pat Devereaux, and a nephew Terry Mallett.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00 11:00am on Saturday February 23, 2013 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Saturday at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
