Northern Michigan unable to finish CCHA sweep of Michigan State

EAST LANSING - The Northern Michigan University hockey team failed to complete the weekend sweep of last-place Michigan State on Saturday, falling 4-2 in front of a sold out crowd at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.

The Wildcats led 1-0 after a goal by sophomore defenseman Mitch Jones 15:55 into the first period and 2-1 after the first goal of the season for senior forward Brian Nugent - who assisted on the first goal - 5:06 into the third period.

The Spartans tied the game 1-1 on a shorthanded goal by Lee Reimer 3:24 into the second period and again at 2-2 at the 9:49 mark of the third with a goal by Michael Ferrantino.

Chris Forfar scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans 11:16 into the third period and Tanner Sorenson added an empty net goal for State with 48 seconds to play in regulation.

Northern, which finished 0-4 on the power play, was outshot 43-20 in the game and 19-3 in the first period.

NMU junior goaltender Jared Coreau made 39 saves while MSU freshman netminder Jake Hildebrand stopped 18 shots.
