ISHPEMING - Ishpeming clamped down on several of Gwinn's top scorers to eke out a 42-40 boys basketball victory in Ishpeming on Friday night.
"I was very, very pleased with our defensive effort," IHS coach John Tiziani said.
He noted that his team kept Gwinn senior Derek Reetz and junior Justin Nyquist to a combined five points and no baskets.
"I thought we played well in the last two games, for a half against Negaunee and three quarters against Marquette, but we finally put together a full game against Gwinn," Tiziani said.
Hematites junior Alex Briones continued to impress in his third game back after a season-long foot injury, recording team highs of 12 points and eight rebounds.
"He came off the bench and hit a 3 and a 2 in the first quarter, and scored in every quarter," Tiziani said. "He adds a legitimate rebounder and a double-digit scoring threat."
