MARQUETTE - Nathan Rotundo, 16, of Marquette captured three Open Age events to help the YMCA of Marquette County Killer Whales to a second place team finish at the annual Yooper Classic Swim Meet in Escanaba Feb. 2.
The Northern Lights YMCA of Delta and Dickinson Counties won the meet. Menominee/Marinette came in third.
Rotundo earned top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.58), 100 freestyle (56.14) and the 400 IM (4:39.31).
Teammate Sam Williams, 14, broke the 13-14 team record en route to winning the 200 freestyle in 2:02.21.
Both are qualified for the YMCA state championships in multiple events.
Paige Whaley, 10, qualified for the state championships by winning the 200-yard freestyle (2:32.67). She also captured the 100 IM (1:26.79).
Delaney Marchiol picked up another state cut with a 20.28 swim in the 8 and under 25 butterfly.
Other event winners at the meet: Lindsey Eaton (Open 200 free, 2:07.18 and Open 500 free, 5:45.30); Thomas Griffith (11-12 50 backstroke, 34.74); Marchiol (8 and under 100 IM, 1:35.71); Archer Olson (8 and under 100 IM, 1:39.22 and 25 backstroke, 20.22); Daniel Schouten (8 and under 25 freestyle, 18.22); and Colin Vanderschaaf (8 and under 50 freestyle, 37.93).
Medalists (placed top three in an event) were: Nathan Brown, Lauren Clement, Kelsey Eaton, Mollie Kilpela, Russell LaBeau, Ben Luke, Colin McCommons, Samantha Olson, Grace Sobczak, Carson Vanderschaaf, Erin Vanderschaaf, Lyndsey Welch, Hannah Winn, Jayme Winn and Elina Zhang.
