SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI - Richard David "Dick" Bradley, age 72, of 416 North State Highway M-553, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday morning, February 8, 2013, at home, in the loving, comforting care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.
Dick was born October 4, 1940 in East St. Louis, Illinois, a son of Fred and Frieda (Evans) Bradley, and raised in East St. Louis and Fairview Heights, Illinois. He entered the US Air Force, serving four years during the Vietnam Era, and met his future wife, Mary Lakenen, while stationed at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. On July 7, 1962 the couple was married at St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey and later resided in Fenton, Missouri where Dick was employed as a machinist. In 1971, the couple relocated to Marquette and Dick began working for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, employed throughout the years at the Brownstone, Tilden, and Empire mines as assistant general foreman and maintenance supervisor, retiring in 2000. Dick was basically a family man who enjoyed and often instituted family gatherings. He loved to cook and the grandchildren eagerly looked forward to the special "poppa pancakes" he made for them. Dick liked to keep busy and always wanted some sort of project. So, whether it be building, woodworking, being on the pontoon boat, enjoying music, or going to camp with his family and friends, Dick was happiest when he could do something for and with family and friends. Last year, he and Mary celebrated 50 years of married life and celebrated the children they raised, the grandchildren they were proud of, and the friends they were blessed with. Dick was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey and Richard Jopling Post #44 of the American Legion.
A loving husband, and best back seat driver, devoted father, proud poppa, and dear brother, Dick is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Lori (Rick) Carlson of Harvey, Lynda (Mike) Vacco of Blaine, MN, and Dave (Tammy) Bradley of Harvey; his grandchildren, Sarah Carlson, Nicole (Eric) Heidtman, Kaydee (fiance, Josh Jacobs) Carlson, Justin Fassbender, Courtney and Brooke Bradley, Brad, Michaela, and Ben Vacco; great - grandchildren, Joshua, Noah, and Bella; his sisters, Carol Sue Yates of Caseyville, IL and Dixie LePes of Milstadt, IL; brothers, Dan (Kim) Bradley of Richmond, VA and Steve (Debbie) Bradley of Flat Rock; several nieces and nephews, among them a special nephew, Terry (LuAnn) Layne of Naperville, IL. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Bradley and wife, Alma; and brothers-in-law, Bob Yates and Milt LePes.
