DIORITE, Mich. - Arne "Muna" M. Laakso, age 84, of 165 Granite St., Champion (Diorite Location), passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Bell Hospital emergency room.
Arne was born February 12, 1928 in Diorite to Gust and Eleanor (Johnson) Laakso. He attended grade school in Diorite and high school in Ishpeming, eventually getting his diploma through a correspondent school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17. Arne was employed by the North Range Mining Co. in Champion until it closed and Northern Electric Foundry in Ishpeming until he retired in 1994.
Arne was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #114, and former member of the Ishpeming Twilight Men's Horseshoe League.
Arne was a private person, enjoyed gardening, camping, spending time at the camp on Lake Superior, playing horseshoe, and spending time with family and friends. Recently he also enjoyed watching "The Price is Right", "Wheel of Fortune" and Major League Baseball on T.V., and listening to Elmer Aho on the radio on Saturday nights.
"Muna" is survived by his wife Shirley (LaParche) Laakso, whom he married May 26, 1950 at the Bethel Lutheran Church, 5 children: Barbara (Steven) Liubakka of Diorite, Bruce (Maryjane) Laakso of Ishpeming, Sherry (Gordon) Murray of Diorite, Alan (Randi) Laakso of Diorite and Joyce (James Parkkonen) Cote of Ishpeming, 16 grandchildren: Kelly (Lance) Miller, Krystal Foreman, Kara (Bradley) Cox, Kasey (Chad Raisanen) Liubakka, Lindsey (Mike Larson) Laakso, Captain Kaylee (Eric) Campbell, Rev. Michael (Nicole) Murray, David Murray, Traci (Kevin Hamel) Murray, Jason (April) Laakso, Jeremy (Karen) Laakso, Jennifer Laakso, Stacy Nardi, Mindy (Jim Koski) Nardi, Michael Nardi and Laura Nardi, 29 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews, brother Melvin (Gail) Laakso of Green Bay, sisters: Elsie Isotalo of Marquette and Pearl Anderson of Duluth, MN, sister-in-laws: Marion Laakso of Ishpeming, Maxine LaParche of Marquette and Marion (Edward) Ouellette of Ishpeming. "Muna" was preceded in death by his parents Gust & Eleanor, daughters Arlene and Ann, brothers: Robert and Arvo and a sister Laila Leisner.
For the past few years Arne was proud of the fact he was the "oldest living resident of Diorite who was born here."
He will be remembered for his dedication to hard work, beautiful vegetable gardens, discussions of the past, great family values, conservative nature.
Cremation will take place, with the burial at the Ishpeming Cemetery. Per Arne's wishes, there will be no visitation, and only a private immediate family funeral will be held.
