MARQUETTE - Superior Central made moves in both the girls and boys weekly high school basketball polls released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
The undefeated Cougar girls (15-0) were finally able to move up a spot to No. 2 in the Class D poll after previous unbeaten Forest Park lost last week. St. Ignace (14-0) is still a unanimous pick as No. 1 in both the U.P. and the state Associated Press polls.
The SC boys (9-4) received a vote for the first time this season in Class D, and only missed the top five by three votes. Munising was bounced out of the No. 5 position after losing to the Cougars last week.
In Class A-B-C, not much changed as Marquette is still a unanimous No. 1 for both boys and girls, since the Redettes' loss to No. 2 Houghton on Monday night occurred after voting took place.
Among the boys, Negaunee remained second and Gwinn third, though for the girls, Negaunee slipped two spots to fifth.
Like the SC boys, however, the Ishpeming girls received their first vote of the season this week and only missed the top five by three votes.
In the state AP ratings, the Negaunee boys held steady at No. 7 in Class C, while the SC girls moved up a spot to No. 3 in the Class D poll. In addition, the Munising boys received two votes, but remained outside the top 10 in Class D.
Two of the best games this week will be played by girls teams on Thursday. In A-B-C, No. 4 Kingsford is at No. 1 Marquette, while in Class D, No. 5 Bark River-Harris is at No. 2 Superior Central.
