RICHMOND TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Esther W. Toms, 98, of Old Hwy M-35 South, Midway Location, died late Tuesday evening, January 29, 2013, at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had resided since October 2010.
Esther was born July 4, 1914, on the Rengo homestead in Forsyth Township to Jacob and Esther (Filippi) Rengo, the oldest of three children. She attended the Gwinn Schools and grew up as a "country girl," enjoying the outdoors, hunting, fishing, sports and gardening, especially flowers. While working in Ishpeming she met Richard C. Toms and they were married on June 24, 1937. They lived in Negaunee for several years before moving to Richmond Township.
Mrs. Toms was a member of the Community Lutheran Church in Suomi Location and the Ladies Guild.
Surviving are her sister-in-law Merle Toms of Negaunee, numerous cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard Toms on September 25, 1979, a brother Leo Rengo, a sister, Laura Rengo, and a sister-in-law Gertrude Rengo.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, February 4 at the Community Lutheran Church in Suomi Location with the Rev. Douglas Norquist officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. Pallbearers will be Ron and Alan Lehtinen, Bill Snyder, Roger Anderson, and Paul and Robert Gravedoni. The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 1:00 PM at the church on Monday.
