City to discuss CR 595 decision

January 30, 2013
The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - The Marquette City Commission has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday morning to discuss issues related to the recent decision not to construct Marquette County Road 595.

In early January, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality decided not to grant a permit for the road, which would have served as a 21-mile north-south route from County Road AAA to U.S. 41 and would have been a more direct route for Rio Tinto to haul nickel and copper from its Eagle Mine to the Humboldt Mill.

In light of the refusal, Rio Tinto has shifted its focus to a trucking route that will involve traveling along County Road 550 into the city of Marquette

From there, the company's trucks would travel along Sugarloaf Avenue and Wright Street on their way to U.S. 41 and the mill.

Thursday's meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. in commission chambers of city hall.
