Marquette boys, girls still No. 1 in U.P.

MARQUETTE - None of the top teams changed, and in fact, all became unanimous picks in the weekly high school basketball polls released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

That includes the Marquette boys (9-1) and girls (11-2) teams in Class A-B-C, along with the Cedarville boys and St. Ignace girls in Class D.

Little movement was made by area teams. The Gwinn boys (9-3) rose up a spot to No. 3 in Class A-B-C after last week's victories over a pair of teams that had been 7-1 - Munising and Houghton.

Both Negaunee teams continue to be ranked in Class A-B-C, the boys (10-1) in second and girls (11-1) in third. Munising (7-2) held onto fifth in Class D boys, too, despite the Gwinn loss.

In the state Associated Press polls also released today, neither Marquette squad has been able to attract even a single vote in Class A, nor have the Negaunee girls in Class C.

But the Miners are No. 7 in the boys listings, the same place they were last week, while Superior Central stayed fourth among Class D girls teams, also where it was a week ago. In addition, the Munising boys made the "others" Class D list again.
