ZEPHYRHILLS, FL - Albert Lowell Peterson, age 89, of Zephyrhills, Florida, and former Marquette resident, entered eternal life Friday afternoon, January 11, 2013, at the Gulfside Regional Hospice in Zephyrhills.
Born October 17, 1923 in Marquette, a son of Simon and Mildred (Wallin) Peterson, Al was raised in Marquette and graduated from the John D. Pierce High School in 1941. He entered the US Army during World War II, serving in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan, and was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. In 1946 he married the former A. Carol Fredricson. Al was employed in maintenance at the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing, later transferring to the Department of Corrections. He retired in 1980 following a 33 year career. For 21 years, Al and Carol resided in Chelsea before moving to Florida for the winter months and spending their summers in Michigan. He loved photographing lighthouses, having picnics at Presque Isle near the ore dock, traveling, camping, woodworking, doing electrical work, and attending horse shows. He was a member of the Chelsea American Legion.
Al is survived by his son, Robert L. (Sally) Peterson of Marquette; his granddaughters, Megan Peterson of Carey, NC and Ashley (Scott) Salgat of Stagecoach, NV; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Carol; Al was preceded in death by his sisters, G. Shirley Peterson; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Signe, Alden and Lucille, and Harold and Mary Lou Peterson.
Graveside services will be held at the Park Cemetery on Monday, January 28, at 2:00 pm. A celebration of Al's life will be held this summer and will be announced.
