Northern Michigan basketball roundup: Women top LSSU while men are routed

SAULT STE. MARIE - Using a balanced scoring attack, the Northern Michigan University women's basketball team took out host Lake Superior State on Thursday, 58-52, in GLIAC play.

Freshman forward Nea Makela scored a game-high 15 points for NMU (10-7 overall, 7-6 in GLIAC), with nine of them coming from the free throw line.

Wildcat sophomore guard Alyssa Colla tallied 14 points, sophomore forward Abbey DeBruin netted 12 and sophomore guard Lauren Gruber added 11.

The Wildcats led by seven (53-46) with 2:51 left in the game. The Lakers then scored four straight on a pair of free throws and a layup to cut the lead down to three.

LSSU (5-12, 4-9) missed two 3-pointers down the stretch while Northern hit 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, including four by Gruber, to clinch the win.

Makela and Gruber each finished with eight rebounds. Gruber added three steals, while Colla had collected four assists.

Maria Blazejewski scored a team-high 13 points for LSSU.

Northern next plays at Northwood at 3 p.m. Saturday.

NMU men routed at LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE - Unable to solve the host Lake Superior State University Lakers, the Northern Michigan University men's basketball team lost, 74-44, Thursday night in GLIAC play.

Freshman center Matt Iverson had a career-high 19 points to lead the Wildcats (4-13 overall, 3-10 GLIAC). He finished 6-for-14 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

NMU sophomore forward Kendall Jackson finished with 11 rebounds.

The Lakers (10-6, 8-5) had four players in double figures, led by Derek Kinney (18) and Cameron Metz (16). Rashaun Carroll scored 11 while Derek Billing added 10.

The home squad started the game on a 29-9 run and never looked back. The Lakers led 41-17 at halftime.

LSSU shot 54.5 percent from the field and outrebounded the Wildcats 38-29.

Northern plays at Northwood at 1 p.m. Saturday.
