MARQUETTE - Marquette kept its stranglehold on two top spots while the Munising boys entered the listings of the top five high school basketball teams released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Both Marquette teams are unanimous No. 1 selections in the Class ABC polls as chosen by each of this week's four voters - one voter was out sick. The Redmen are 8-1 and Redettes 10-2.
Munising (7-1), following its 40-37 upset of No. 1 Carney-Nadeau on Jan. 14, moved into fifth place in the Class D boys poll. The Wolves slipped into a tie for first with Cedarville.
In ABC boys, Negaunee (9-1) remained second as Gwinn (8-3) slipped a spot to fourth.
Among ABC girls, Negaunee (9-1) moved up from fifth to third, while L'Anse got a single vote, but didn't crack the top five.
In Class D girls, Superior Central (12-0) remains stuck in third despite its undefeated record as No. 1 St. Ignace and No. 2 Forest Park also have yet to lose a game.
In the state Associated Press boys polls also released today, Negaunee moved up three spots from last week to No. 7 in Class C and is the only U.P. team on that list.
Among state girls teams, SC remains No. 4 in Class D for the second straight week behind No. 1 St. Ignace and No. 2 Forest Park. North Central is 10th and three other U.P. schools received votes.
