L'ANSE - Solid defense by Negaunee allowed some easy transition baskets while keeping L'Anse's sharpshooters off balance in the Miners' 70-42 boys basketball victory on Tuesday.
"L'Anse was very patient with the ball," NHS coach Mike O'Donnell said. "They wanted to slow down the pace of the game."
It worked in the first quarter as Negaunee led just 14-11. But the Miners raced out in the second quarter to go up 25-15 at halftime.
"We were able to make some baskets and get into our full-court pressure off that in the second quarter," O'Donnell said.
Negaunee (8-1) poured it on in the third, scoring 25 points to go ahead 50-22 heading into the final period.
L'Anse (3-5) hit seven 3-pointers, led by Jacob Ostermeyer making four of them for all of his team-high 12 points. Teammate Jimmy Veker added 11 points.
For Negaunee, junior Tyler Jandron scored 19 points and made five steals, junior Eric Lori scored 14 points and senior Tanner Uren contributed eight points, seven assists and five rebounds.
The Miners also won the JV game, but no score was available.
Superior Central 71,
Dollar Bay 32
At Dollar Bay, Matt Verbrigghe led three Superior Central players in double figures with 18 points. Bryce Richard tossed in 16 and Trevor Maki contributed 10 as the Cougars improved to 6-4 overall.
SC led 19-4 after one quarter and 38-14 at the half against the Bays (1-8).
"We played well defensively," SC head coach Herb Jenkins said. "Dollar Bay played hard, but they just struggled to defend our size."
