MARQUETTE - The Marquette boys and girls continue to hold down the No. 1 spots in Class A-B-C in weekly basketball polls released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

After a loss to Sault Ste. Marie last week, the Redmen lost one first-place vote to No. 2 Negaunee as each team is 7-1. The Miners' only loss came to MSHS in December.

Gwinn (6-2) moved from a tie for fourth into third alone after two wins last week, including a decisive one over previous No. 3 Iron Mountain.

For Class ABC girls, the Redettes (8-2) earned four of five first-place votes for the second straight week with the other No. 1 ballot going to 8-1 Houghton.

L'Anse (7-1) and Negaunee (7-1) flip-flopped with the Purple Hornets moving up from fifth to fourth and the Miners down from a tie for third to fifth, even though each school won its only game last week.

In the Class D polls, the Superior Central girls were the lone area team to break into the top five.

In the Associated Press' statewide polls also released today, the Negaunee boys are No. 10 in Class C, the only U.P. team in that listing, while the Superior Central girls are No. 4 in Class D, with St. Ignace and Forest Park holding down the top two spots.
