Union backs agencies

Laurie Schmit of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul receives a $500 check from Neil Traye, president of Local 1852 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The local - which represents about 140 employees of the city of Marquette, Marquette Township, Peter White Public Library, Marquette County Landfill and Marquette Housing Authority - also donated $500 each to the Catholic Outreach Adopt-a-Family program and the Salvation Army. The local has donated more than $17,500 to various area charities over the last 11 years.
