ISHPEMING - Westwood High School just didn't have enough offensive firepower against visiting Gwinn on "Armed Forces Night" Wednesday.
Justin Luke poured in a game-high 20 points, but it didn't keep the Patriots from dropping a 56-44 Mid-Peninsula Conference decision to the Modeltowners.
"We dug ourselves a deep hole in the second quarter," WHS head coach Ryan Reichel said after his team had fallen to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the M-PC. "We were down 26-13, but managed to make just 29-25 at the half.
"We made some good things happen in the third quarter, but their (defensive) pressure got to us. Their effort wore on us a little."
Mark Boettcher and Justin Beauchamp tossed in 11 points apiece for Gwinn (5-2, 3-2).
Reichel said both teams wore camo shirts to salute both current and past members of the military who attended the game.
"We had a great turnout of veterans," he said. "Members of the Michigan National Guard armory in Ishpeming helped us out, too."
Sault Ste. Marie 59.
At Marquette Wednesday, the host Redmen suffered their first loss of the season to Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday night, in a non-conference makeup game.
Mark Pap poured in 22 points and hauled in 16 rebounds for Marquette (6-1).
Ray'Shon Anderson paced the Sault (2-4) with 13 points.
