ISHPEMING, Mich. - Raphael G. "Ray" Heinzman, age 66, of 639 E. Michigan St., Ishpeming went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at his home and while under the loving care of his family and the Lake Superior Hospice following a battle with mesothelioma.
Ray was born August 4, 1946 in Madison, WI to the late George and Charlene (Viney) Heinzman and grew up in Belleville, WI. He graduated from high school in 1964 from Belleville High School. Ray went on to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Valley Forge. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with a Divine Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon. Ray was honorably discharged from the Navy on May 16, 1971. He married Mary DeRoche on April 25, 1975 in Ishpeming and they have resided here since. Ray was employed by Hobart Food Equipment Co. as a Sales and Serviceman for over 30 years, retiring in 2008.
Ray was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and served on the church council. He was also a member of the Ishpeming Elks Lodge. Ray was a true outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and camping. He could also be found tending to the yard around his home.
Survivors include his wife Mary Heinzman of Ishpeming, 3 children Bradley (Elizabeth) Heinzman of Ishpeming, Tracy Coskie and her husband Mark Chanen of Bellingham, WA and Paul (Julie) Coskie of St. Joseph, MI, 6 grandchildren Ashenafi Chanen, Samantha, McKenna and Olivia Coskie, and Angelina and Sophia Heinzman, 3 sisters Geraldine (Paul) Linden, Mary Stock, Sharon (Roger) Neath, and a brother Gary (Jean) Heinzman all of Belleville, WI, 3 sisters-in-law Pat Phare of Ishpeming, Janet DeRoche of Fort Wayne, IN and Kathleen Eckermann of Syracuse, NY along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law Jim Stock.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:30 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 12, 2012 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kenneth Lahners to officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 at the conclusion of the service. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall. Inurnment will take place in the Lamb of God Columbarium at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial fund or the Lake Superior Hospice in Ray's memory.
