MSHS teams top first U.P. hoops polls

MARQUETTE - Marquette Senior High School is ranked No. 1 in both boys and girls Class ABC balloting in the first Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls of the season.

Coach Brad Nelson's MSHS boys (5-0) picked all five first place votes by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. The Redmen gained 25 points.

Negaunee (6-1), its only loss (59-43) coming at Marquette on Dec. 13, holds down the second spot. Coach Mike O'Donnell's Miners have 20 points.

Coach Darren Sinnaeve's Gwinn Modeltowners (4-2) are ranked No. 3 with four points.

In the girls balloting, MSHS (7-2) has been voted No. 1 in Class ABC. The Redettes of coach Ben Smith pocketed four top votes and 24 points.

Coach Brandon Sager's Negaunee club (6-1) is tied with Calumet (6-1) for third. Both the Miners and Copper Kings have 13 points.

In Class D, Superior Central (8-0) is No. 3 behind unanimous No. 1 pick St. Ignace (8-0) and runner-up Forest Park (8-0). Coach Greg Trowbridge's Cougars have 15 poll points.
