Call me Santa for a day

December 23, 2012
By CRAIG?REMSBURG - Senior Sports Writer , The Mining Journal

With Christmas coming Tuesday, I'd like to play Santa Claus for a day.

If I was jolly old St. Nick, I'd give:

- The Detroit Lions a running back with some speed to the outside and/or a couple of defensive backs who know what pass coverage means.

- A new tennis court for Ishpeming High School head net coach Erl Langness, or at least some repairs on the court that holds No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles play.

- The NHL players and owners some common sense and spirit of compromise to end the silly impasse between the two parties.

- The Detroit Pistons' Kevin Durant with a longterm contract.

- Give Gwinn High School boys varsity basketball coach Darren Sinnaeve a state championship.

- Michigan State University men's basketball coach Tom Izzo another NCAA title after sweeping the University of Michigan this season.

- The Detroit Tigers an effective closer for this coming season.

- Westwood High School varsity head football coach Jon Beckman a Mid-Peninsula Conference title next season.

- Mining Journal sports editor Matt Wellens' dog Roxie an unlimited supply of canine treats.

- MSU a football bowl win to end an otherwise disappointing season.

- MJ sports colleague Steve Brownlee a 300 game and/or an 800 series in bowling this season.

- My son Connor's Midget BB hockey team a state championship so he can draw even with his older brother Clint in that category.

- Dan and Dave Ellis, and eventually, Carley Saint-Onge, spots on the PGA and LPGA tours, respectively, if they want to turn pro.

- Ishpeming High School varsity head basketball coach John Tiziani a clean bill of health.

- Head hockey coach Walt Kyle a couple of explosive Northern Michigan University offensive players to take some pressure off his defensive corps and goaltender Jared Coreau.

- IHS athletic director Terry Roberts an invitation to call me anytime so we can tease each other, crack a couple of jokes and generally ease the pressure of our two jobs.

- Longtime Mining Journal writer and former sports editor Renee Prusi a Detroit Lions bobblehead doll for her desk, a gift she would no doubt cherish.
