MARQUETTE - A 7-6 triumph over the Ozaukee (Wis.) Ice Dogs gave the Marquette Lady Sentinels U19 AA hockey team the Battle of the Bay tournament championship Dec. 15-16 in Ashland, Wis.
Allison Carlson (3), Melissa Casey, Kirsten Iwanski (2) and Brock Nelsen scored for the winners.
Collecting assists were Iwanski, Sydney Higgins, Nelsen, Montana Viitala, Haley Boroughf and Carlson.
Carley Maanika made 23 saves in net for Marquette.
The previous afternoon, the Lady Sentinels blanked the Osseo-Maple Grove (Minn.) co-op squad, 6-0.
Carlson (3), Brock Nelsen (2) and Viitala notched markers for Marquette. Drawing assists were Boroughf (2), Necia Lessard, Viitala, Iwanski, Carlson and Sam Nelson.
Maanika turned aside nine shots for the shutout.
Saturday morning, the Lady Sentinels beat Thunder Bay (Ont.) by forfeit after leading, 4-2, in the third period. The Thunder Bay goaltender was unable to complete the game due to injury.
Up to that point, Iwanski, Casey, Nelson and Emma Kaznowski had found the back of the net for Marquette. Assisting were Carlson, Nelson and Higgins, while Maanika stopped 20 shots on net.
Wells Fargo U14 girls
fall to Traverse City
MARQUETTE - In a pair of contests in downstate Cheboygan, the Wells Fargo U14 girls hockey team dropped both contests to the Traverse City Stars girls U14 squad, 4-2 and 5-3.
Scoring in the first game came on unassisted goals by Paris Wegleitner and Lexi Anderson.
In the second contest, Anderson notched a pair of unassisted markers, while Kara Salo added a goal on assists from Ashlyn Steer and Abbie Tollefson.
Briana Holman made 42 saves in net in the two games for Wells Fargo.
JV Redmen fall 3-1 to
MARQUETTE - The Marquette Senior High School junior varsity hockey team dropped a 3-1 home game to the Copper Kings on Dec. 13 after a quick 3-0 lead early in the game.
"We played very well at times, and not so well at others," said head coach Kevin Thomsen. "When we made mistakes, they capitalized on them."
While the Redmen took the loss, they did outshoot the Kings, and have similarly outshot their past three opponents in losses.
"The shots were much closer than Sunday, but I felt that we still played good enough to win, but just didn't."
Cole Rieboldt was the lone Redmen to connect with a goal, while Tanner Carriere and Lucas Klinger notched the assists.
Gabe Apple took the loss in the Redmen's net.
MSHS travels to Traverse City this weekend.
Legion bantams swept
MARQUETTE - A trip to downstate Traverse City Dec. 15-16 didn't prove to be kind to the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team.
Coach Brian Nebel's icers fell to T.C. Pepsi, 1-0, 2-1 and 2-0.
In the first contest, Travis Cameron made 33 saves in net for Legion. His counterpart, Nick Meier, came up with 16 stops.
In Game 2, Kyle Lane scored an early third period goal for Legion, assisted by Nick Bink and Tristan Ashbrook. But Pepsi hit the twine at 13:10 for the win.
Cameron turned aside 30 shots on net, Meier 17.
In the third contest, Cameron made 25 saves, Meier 16.
"We held a good Traverse City tam to only five goals, but we need to learn how to score in tight games," Nebel said. "It has been an issue all year for us, as we're averaging only two goals a game."
City Insurance Pee Wees
MARQUETTE - Going 3-1-0 over the weekend of Dec. 15-16, the Marquette City Insurance Pee Wee AA hockey team clinched the NIHL regular season championship.
Sunday morning, the Sentinels ran into some home cooking as host Mackinaw City scored four power play goals to defeat the Sentinels, 4-1.
Reece Fortner notched the lone tally for the Sentinels, with assists from Daunte Fortner and Alec Olivier
Marquette netminder Dylan Sibilsky turned aside 23 shots.
Later Sunday, City Insurance won a 9-6 shootout over Mackinaw City. Nate Bordson scored four goals and assisted twice for the winners.
Luke Beerman and Fortner added two goals apiece, while Kobie Guidebeck chipped in a tally for the Sentinels.
Ethan Jones, Nick Leafers and Sean O'Conner picked up helpers.
Tyler Bergwall made 20 stops for the Sentinels (27-8-1 overall, 17-1-0 NIHL).
Saturday, City Insurance swept the host Traverse City Angels, 4-2 and 7-2.
In the first game, Fortner, Tanner Phillips, Beerman, and Bordson scored goals. Bordson assisted twice, while Fortner and Phillips added one helper each.
Sibilsky turned aside eight shots on net.
In the second game, Beerman posted the hat trick, while Fortner added two goals. Phillips and Bordson each added another tally in the 7-2 rout.
Bordson and Jones added two assists, while Fortner, Beerman and Phillips contributed helpers, as well.
Bergwall recorded 13 saves.
TriMedia squirts go 3-1
MARQUETTE - In Dec. 8-9 action, the TriMedia Squirt hockey team of Marquette went 3-1 to improve its season record to 21-4-4.
Sunday, the Sentinels beat Eagle River (Wis.), 4-1, before losing a 5-4 decision.
In the two games, Marquette's Brayden Stannard scored two goals and tallied two assists; Jacob Peterson added two markers and a helper; and Hogan Nemetz turned in a goal and two assists.
Also, Ethan Sellers totaled a goal and an assist; Ryan McCoy and Lucas Guertin each chipped in a tally; and Evan Kroll collected an assist. TriMedia goaltender Preston Maki turned aside 20 shots in the opener, while he and Carsen Hayes split the netminding duties in the nightcap (no saves available).
Saturday, the Sentinels drubbed the Keweenaw Storm twice, 7-1 and 9-2. Cooper Anderson led the way by notching five goals and two assists in the series.
Stannard came up with four goals and three assists; Nemetz scored twice with two helpers; Peterson posted a goal and two assists; and Ansel Frost scored twice.
Joseph Luke collected four assists, including a play maker in the second game; and Kroll and Jacob Hendricks each added an assist.
Maki made 23 stops in the first game, while Hayes stopped 14 shots in the second.
