MUNISING - Michigan State Police have released the names of those involved in a two-car crash in Alger County on Thursday that killed one driver and injured another.

Police said Sarah Frances Gunderson, 25, of Thompson, N.D., died at the scene of the accident, which occurred on M-28 about a mile west of Munising. The driver of the other vehicle, Richard Vanverschaegen, 31, of Munising, was listed in fair condition today at Marquette General Hospital.

The crash was reported at 7:35 a.m. Thursday.

State police said preliminary investigation showed Vanverschaegen was driving east on the highway when his 2006 Pontiac G6 crossed the centerline and struck Gunderson's westbound 2008 Ford Focus.

Vanverschaegen was taken to MGH by Alger County EMS personnel.

Police said both drivers were wearing safety belts.

State police said an accident reconstructionist was heading to the scene today. Police said there was no indication weather or road conditions contributed to the crash.

State police said an autopsy may be conducted, pending a decision by the Alger County Medical Examiner.

John Pepin can be reached at 906-228-2500, ext. 206.
