ISHPEMING, MI. - Merle O. Oien, age 91 of 914 N. Main St. Ishpeming, passed away on Sunday, December 09, 2012 at the Bell Hospital where she been a patient for 4 days.
Merle was born on January 24, 1921 in Negaunee to Percy & Lily (Hampton) Greenway. Merle worked as a cook at the C.L. Phelps School and later as a bank teller at the Miner's Bank in Ishpeming where she worked until the age of 70. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. Merle enjoyed being involved with the Blue Notes Parents Club. She was a wonderful grandmother, helping raising her grandchildren.
Merle is survived by 2 sons: Alan Oien of Canton, MI and Wayne Oien of Ishpeming, step daughters: Karen (Bill) Morchin of Auburn, Washington and Nancy (Roth) Swain of Doylestown, Ohio, 4 grandchildren: Kristine (Ryan) Tunteri, Jennifer (Christopher) Goodall, Paul (fiancee Sheila) Oien and Adam Johnson, a great grandchild Coraline Goodall, special nieces Betty Waara and Carol Sillanpaa along with numerous other nieces and nephews. Merle was preceded in death by her husband Robert Paul Oien, sisters: Dorothy Stenglein, Lillian Kangas, Lois Greenway and Gladys Brisson and brothers: Eldred Greenway and Gordon Jewell.

Merle's family will greet relatives and friends from 12:30-2:00 pm on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Wesley United Methodist Church where a memorial service will be held at 2:00pm with Rev. Scott Lindenberg officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
A coffee and dessert social will be held following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be directed to the Ishpeming Senior Center 320 S. Pine St. Ishpeming in memory of Merle.
