Jack W. Rydquist

ESCANABA, Mich. - Jack W. Rydquist, 70, 3826 L.15 Lane, Escanaba, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Marquette General Hospital following a lingering illness.

He was born on December 29, 1941 in Manistique, son of Frank J. and Margaret (Soukup) Rydquist. Jack was raised in Manistique and graduated from Manistique High School in 1960. He then proudly attended Michigan State University earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

On March 1, 1984, Jack married the former Katherine Hawes in Escanaba.

Following college, Jack worked in Detroit doing geological surveying for the federal government. When an opportunity arose to work for the State of Michigan, Jack moved to Escanaba and was the Regional and District Supervisor for the Department of Natural Resources/Department of Environmental Quality and worked with the surface water quality division and was appointed the multi media coordinator for the DEQ. After 31 years with the State of Michigan, Jack retired in 1997.

Jack was dedicated to multiple environmental organizations such as the American Water Works Association; he was chairperson of the Lake Superior Watershed Partnership in Marquette, among many others.

Following Jack's retirement, during the U.P. Wastewater Treatment Operator annual convention an individual was awarded the Jack W. Rydquist award for excellence.

He was an avid outdoorsman with a love for fishing, hunting, and gardening. Jack was very talented in woodworking and enjoyed reading in addition to spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Among survivors include his wife, Katherine of Escanaba; children, Cari (Ken) Mosher of Minneapolis, MN and James (Theresa) Rydquist of Canton, MI; grandchildren, Megan, Emily and Hanna Mosher and Alexander Jackson and Evan James Rydquist; sisters, Betty Hough of Manistique and Jill (Louie) Cerulli of St. Augustine, FL; mother-in-law, Linnea Hawes of Escanaba; sister-in-law, Marilyn Rydquist of Utica, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Frank; and sister, Peggy Hellsten.

Visitation will be on Monday, December 10th from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Family and friends will have an opportunity to share memories at 6 p.m. A luncheon will follow in the funeral home dining area.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bay Collect Foundation, Water Technology Scholarship in Jack's name.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Rydquist family.
