ISHPEMING - The reconfigured Ishpeming City Council approved closing city hall on Fridays at its meeting Wednesday.
The plan to reduce city hall hours by closing the building to the public on Fridays was recommended by City Manager Jered Ottenwess, who said he based his recommendation on dwindling resources and administrative staff being stretched thin.
"It would be a tremendous benefit for our city hall staff to be able to have a work day at city hall on Fridays where city hall is not open to the public," Ottenwess said. "We would still be doing administrative work internally, it would be much more efficient on how our staff can get that work completed and we would also still be able to have access with appointments."

The council unanimously approved the reduction of city hall hours so normal business hours will be Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new hours will start on the first of the year.
In regard to changes on the council, Mike Tall took over as mayor and new council members Dave Williams and Mike Tonkin took their seats on the board. Williams, the owner of the business Old School in Ishpeming, said he didn't run for city council with an specific agenda.
"I ran because I wanted to serve the community," Williams said. "I think I have things to offer. I live here, I grew up here, I graduated from high school here and I own a small business in town, so I thought I should give something back."
Tonkin, who is part owner of Consumers Building Supply Co., said he had planned to run several years back and finally decided it was time to do so.
"I hope to get a more positive attitude around the city and around the council," Tonkin said.
Both councilmen said they are willing to listen to anybody who has concerns or questions about what's happening in the city.
