MARQUETTE - Marquette Mountain is doing its part to help The Mining Journal Cheer Club by giving out a free ski pass Friday to anyone who brings in a toy to donate.
The only requirement: the toy's value has to be $9.99 or more.
Two years ago, Marquette Mountain ran the same promotion and it did really well but last year it didn't do as well, said general manager Vern Barber.

"Two years ago we filled up a full-size truck and nearly buried the tree at the office in Marquette," Barber said.
Toys have to be new and not gift wrapped. According to Barber, most people will go to the store right before going to the mountain so the price tag is still on them.
"We're pretty much going with the honor system when it comes to the price of the toy," Barber said. "But if the toy really looks cheaper than what we're asking for we might ask to see a receipt."
Marquette Mountain has always focused on supporting community fundraising and events throughout the year, with The Mining Journal Cheer Club being one of them, Barber said.
"We tried it once and found that it works really well, so we stuck with it," Barber said.
The mountain is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. An all-day pass costs $27 and it's $17 after 1 p.m. for all ages 9 and up. The Cheer Club gift deal is for Friday only. The mountain is open for preseason hours starting Friday and will also be open Saturday and Sunday for the same hours. Regular season days and hours begin Monday, Dec. 17.
"We're glad the weather has changed and because of it we are opening five days earlier from last year," Barber said. "The weather has been great for the mountain and hopefully winter is here to stay."
Donations for the Cheer Club can be dropped off until Dec. 14 at The Mining Journal offices in Marquette and Ishpeming, the Marquette and Ishpeming Salvation Army offices, the Marquette Township hall, ACE Hardware in Gwinn and Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.
