NMU women's basketball team sweeps Ashland Holiday Inn Classic

Wildcat men drop two in Milwaukee

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team won both of its contests over the weekend at the Ashland Holiday Inn Classic, defeating Urbana on Sunday, 81-71, and Mercyhurst on Saturday, 59-44.

Against Mercyhurst, the Wildcats (3-1) built a 32-14 halftime lead and were led scoring-wise by sophomore Maria Almquist and freshman Nea Makela, who both had 10 points. Makela also led in rebounding with nine boards.

The 'Cats were only able to build a 32-28 halftime lead over Urbana and fell behind by as much as six points in the second half before rallying and leading by as much as 12 points.

Sophomore Alyssa Colla led the Wildcats with 19 points on four field goals and 11-of-19 shooting from the free throw line. Makela totaled 16 points, sophomore Lauren Gruber had 13 points and Almquist finished with 12.

Sophomore Abby DeBruin led NMU with 12 rebounds while Makela had 11 to complete a double-double.

NMU opens GLIAC play in Canton, Ohio at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Walsh University and 3 p.m. on Saturday at Malone University, also in Canton.

WILDCAT MEN DROP TWO IN MILWAUKEE

MILWAUKEE - The four Northern Michigan University basketball players who hail from Milwaukee, plus head coach Doug Lewis, failed to experience the happy homecoming they hoped for on the hardwood over the weekend, dropping both games in the Fresh Coast Classic at the Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee.

The Wildcats opened the tournament with a 78-69 loss on Friday to No. 15-ranked Winston Salem State and fell Saturday in the consolation game, 67-56, to Lincoln University (Pa.).

NMU trailed 28-19 at halftime to Lincoln, but battled back within one point in the second half. NMU even tied Lincoln with two minutes to play, but never grasped the lead.

Freshman Terry Nash of Milwaukee had 12 points to lead Northern while junior Matt Craggs had 11 and senior TJ Cameron had 10. Junior Scooter Johnson led NMU on the boards with eight rebounds.

Against Winston Salem State, freshman Steven Pelkofer of Milwaukee had a team-high 15 points with Craggs.

NMU, at 1-2 overall, opens GLIAC play in Canton, Ohio at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Walsh University and 1 p.m. on Saturday at Malone University, also in Canton.
