Township event underscores community spirit

November 25, 2012
The Mining Journal

Marquette Township is at it again, working to instill a deeper sense of community with the return of its "Catch the Christmas Spirit" tree lighting event Tuesday at the Westwood Mall. This is the second year for the yuletide festivities, after a successful inaugural celebration last year.

The event will include music, sleigh rides and a visit from Santa Claus, who will light the Christmas tree being donated by Sargent Evergreens Tree Farm in Rapid River.

"After the Christmas tree is lit, guests will be free to enter the mall for photos with Santa (families can also take their own pictures) and enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies inside the mall compliments of Beanarella's Coffeehouse and Huron Mountain Bakery," said LeAnne Kachmarski of the township events committee in a news release. "Ishpeming's Bill Richards will have his beautiful Pheordes horses on hand to give free horse-drawn wagon rides for the family."

A sheriff's deputy will be patrolling the ceremony with reports surfacing the Grinch may be on the loose in the township, "disrupting the Christmas spirit and looking to prevent the tree lighting ceremony."

We think the Christmas celebration is great fun and harkens back to a simpler time with cookies, horse-drawn wagons and pictures with Santa. But also, this effort is another example of caring township officials working to promote their community, while at the same time developing pride and community spirit among citizens.

Over the past few years, the township has taken deliberate steps and an active role in moving the township forward in this manner. Other successful events have included Lions Field Day and a car show and tour which took place at the mall this past summer.

We applaud Marquette Township for the enthusiasm it continues to demonstrate for itself and its residents. Happy holidays and congratulations.
