MILWAUKEE - The Northern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped its opening game of the Fresh Coach Classic in Milwaukee, 78-69, to No. 15 Winston-Salem State on Friday.
The Wildcats (1-1), tied 36-36 with the Rams (2-2) at halftime, will play in the consolation game at 5 p.m. today against Lincoln University.
Freshman guard Stephen Pelkofer and junior forward Matthew Craggs led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points each. Freshman point guard Terry Nash tossed in 12 points.
Junior forward Scooter Johnson notched nine points and hauled in a team-high seven rebounds.
Pelkofer was 6 of 8 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3-point range.
Craggs and Nash each hit 5 of 11 from the field as the Wildcats shot 49.1 percent from two-point range as a team and 46.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Four Rams reached double figures in scoring with Marcus Wells scoring 17, Justin Glover posting 16 and Tyre Desmore adding 12.
Wakefield Ellison came off the Rams bench to score 12 points.
Winston-Salem shot 55.3 percent from the field and 61.3 percent from the free throw line, making 19 of 31 attempts.
