Gwinn wins HS Bowl opener

The Gwinn Model Towners played the Wakefield-Marenisco Cardinals in the first round of High School Bowl and won by a score of 170-130. Representing Gwinn, seated from left, are players Erik Flinn, Kacy Cannon, team captain Mitchell Paris and Erica Sanford. Standing are alternates Ben Hafer with Coach Shaun Clark. Players for Wakefield-Marenisco are, seated from left, Charlie Arnold, team captain Samuel Wanink, Hannah Cormier and Miranda Sibley. Standing are alternates Jacob DeWitt with Coach Katherine Adams. High School Bowl host G.G. Gordon is standing at lower left. Forty schools from the Upper Peninsula field teams for Public TV 13's High School Bowl tournament, now celebrating 35 years on the air. Gwinn will advance to the second round when they play St. Ignace in Game 13, scheduled to air on Dec. 22. Running from November through the championship game in April, the High School Bowl series airs on Public TV 13 at 8 p.m. Saturdays and at noon Mondays at noon. Major production funding for High School Bowl is provided by The Sam & Elinor Benedict Fund and The Ray and Peg Hirvonen Foundation. State, Tahquamenon Area, Marquette Community Federal, SIR Credit Union, Soo Co-op,Settlers Federal, Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Federal, Peninsula Federal, U.P. Catholic, Northern United Federal, Delta County, Menominee County Federal; and by NewPage Corporation.
